Simple but addictive "Play one more time" arcade runner game

TL;DR: Dungeons of Doom is a simple arcade runner/jumper with pleasant graphics and a quick gameloop. Although it lacks in gameplay depth, it is suprisingly addictive as it gives you the "One more round" itch.

First Impressions and Playthrough

Launching the app shows you some nice background art and medieval music right out the gate. One thing I appreciate is a way to turn off the sound right at the start (For those of you playing in school or the office and need it quiet). A simple one menu tutorial shows you the mechanics and they are clear, jump. You choose a hero where only 1 is unlocked and the others are gated behind a purchase. Purely cosmetic purchases. After choosing it launches you right into a procedural vertical map. Your hero runs back and forth, making your only action to jump at the right time to avoid monsters, traps and grab items on your way up to best your high score. Swamp water will continue to rise, forcing the player to make quick decisions. If you die? Start over. Simple.

Review Notes

Monetization
Free with optional $.99 unlocks. There is nothing forced on the player and we appreciate this.

Gameplay
Simple but addictive loop requiring either a tap or crown twist to jump. Try to beat your high scrore, repeat. It lacks any depth to gameplay and average round time (for me) was about 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

Visuals
One of the nicer games to look at on watches. Simple but detailed 2d art and animations set in a medieval theme.

Controls
You either tap the screen or turn the crown to jump. As simple as it gets. We appreciate allowing the crown to jump as it feels natural on a watch and keeps your fingers from cluttering the screen. However it would be nice to use the crown while in the hero chose menu.

Final Verdict

Dungeons of Doom scratches that quick gameplay itch. It has fair monetization practices and easy to understand mechanics. If you are looking for a deeper gameplay loop though, this won't deliver. Great time killer.

Pros

  • Simple gameplay loop
  • No forced monetization or P2P
  • Pleasant Visuals

Cons

  • No gameplay depth
