Ludo - Watch Game Review

TL;DR: Ludo offers some genuinely nice features for a smartwatch title. Multiplayer, pass-and-play, and multiple modes plus bright, vibrant visuals. Unfortunately, it's crippled by heavy monetization. After one incomplete playthrough, you're locked out unless you pay a $4.99 monthly subscription. Ads pop up constantly, and many elements feel designed to push purchases.

First Impressions & Playthrough

Launching the app immediately greets you with a subscription prompt for $4.99/month (at time of testing). Once inside, the feature list looks promising: pass-and-play with friends, a Snakes and Ladders mode (Chutes and Ladders), the main Ludo board, and online multiplayer, a rare and welcome addition on Watch.

You can buy cosmetic boards and dice for $0.99 each, though the subscription supposedly unlocks them all. The catch? You barely get to use any of it.

I tried the Snakes and Ladders mode first. It’s essentially “press the tiny roll button, watch the animation, repeat.” There’s almost no real gameplay or strategy — it feels like a visual dice roller. No tutorial explains the rules or flow.

Switching to the main Ludo mode left me even more confused. I couldn’t figure out how to progress past the first roll, and there’s no in-app tutorial or help section. Pausing the game triggers an ad. Exiting to the menu triggers another. After one short session, the game locked me out entirely, requiring the monthly subscription to continue.

Review Notes

Monetization (Biggest Issue)
The app pushes subscriptions and ads aggressively from the start. The “play” button often leads to ads (with a tiny, easy-to-miss close button). Exiting a game or the app frequently shows more ads or the subscription screen. It never feels like a one-time purchase. It’s clearly built around recurring revenue.

Gameplay

  • Snakes & Ladders: Simple and repetitive. Fine for very young kids or ultra-casual play, but lacks depth.
  • Ludo: Potentially more strategic, but the lack of any tutorial makes it inaccessible if you’re not already familiar with the rules. Controls are cramped on the small screen.

Visuals
Bright, colorful, and crisp. One of the better-looking Watch games I’ve tried. Menus and boards look clean and vibrant.

Controls
Main menus are straightforward. In-game action buttons (especially the roll) are unfortunately too small and fiddly on the Watch.

Final Verdict

Ludo has real potential with its features and visuals, but the paywall and ad pressure make it frustrating to recommend in its current state. If you’re okay with a very limited free taste and are familiar with Ludo rules, it might scratch a quick itch. For most players, the monetization kills the fun.

Cons

  • Horrible monetization
  • Small buttons in game
