We do a boring thing here that turns out to be very useful: we keep our whole catalog in one place and sort it however we like. The other day we sorted every game by its store rating and stared at the result, because it was lopsided in a way worth explaining.
Here is what our own numbers say, right now:
So what is going on? There are two answers, and honesty means telling you both, because one of them is not flattering to us or to the story we would love to tell.
Apple users rate higher. Not just for watch games, for everything. Across the entire app world, iOS ratings run meaningfully above Android, thanks to different rating prompts and, frankly, a different temperament. Some of that near-full-star gap is simply that an Apple Watch owner who enjoys a game gives it five stars, while the same game on Wear OS gets a more grudging four.
We are not going to pretend Wear OS is secretly winning. It rates lower, and part of that is real. Fair is fair.
But not all of that gap is quality. Some of it is the kind of thing that ends up rated highly on each store.
When we sorted the list, sitting near the very top of Wear OS "games" was a cluster of Omnitrix watch-simulators: novelty apps that turn your watch into the gadget from a certain kids' cartoon. One sat at 4.9 stars. They are filed under Simulation. They are not games. They are a costume for your watch, riding a famous name.
Google Play's algorithm does not care about that distinction. It sees a high rating and a pile of downloads and it does exactly what it is built to do: it pushes them up. The chart rewards the knockoff.
We did the other thing. We removed them, because a list of games should contain games.
That single decision is the whole reason a site like this exists.
An algorithm optimizes for signals. A person asks whether the thing is actually any good.
A store chart is a machine measuring downloads and star averages. It cannot tell the difference between a real game that 1,400 people genuinely love and a cartoon costume that 1,000 people tapped five stars on and forgot. We can, because we open them.
This is not a dunk on Google. Real gems live on Wear OS. There is an excellent little chess game with over a thousand ratings, a surprisingly good emulator, some solid brain-training. The platform is not a wasteland. It is under-served.
And that is the actual problem. There are so few genuinely great Wear OS games that novelty junk rushes in to fill the vacuum at the top of the chart. The answer is not to sneer at Wear OS. The answer is more good games, and a place that tells you which ones are real.
Two things to take away.
First, do not trust a raw store chart. A 4.9 on a novelty app is not the same as a 4.5 on a real game with a thousand players behind it. Look at what the thing actually is before you look at the number on it.
Second, this is exactly the job we signed up for. We show you the rating for your watch instead of a blended average that is true for nobody, we keep the non-games out, and every review here is written by a human who played it.
If you build watch games, especially for Wear OS, the door is wide open and the bar is embarrassingly reachable. And if you just want to play something good on your wrist, that is the whole point of this place.
